Each board provides audiologists or speech‑language pathologists a chance to become a Board Certified Specialist (BCS). The BCS is a formalized credential beyond the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) that recognizes advanced knowledge and skills in a specialized area of practice, as well as a mechanism by which the public can identify practi- tioners with specialized clinical education and experience and practitioners can specify the nature of the clinical practice they provide. • American Audiology Board of Intraoperative Monitoring • American Board of Autism Spectrum Disorders • American Board of Child Language and Language Disorders • American Board of Fluency and Fluency Disorders • American Board of Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders SCBs are responsible for specifying their own required education, experiential, and clinical experience and the minimum standards— set by the Council for Clinical Certification in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CFCC)—that must be met to qualify for specialty certifica- tion in that SCB’s area of practice. Each SCB is also responsible for implementing its own specialty certification program, which includes the reviewing of individual applications and conferring the BCS status on qualified applicants.
