Why is ASHA sharing a safety update?

On August 11, 2025, a Presidential executive order declared a crime emergency in Washington, D.C., and activated the DC National Guard. We want to be transparent about what’s happening and share the steps we’re taking to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all attendees.

What safety measures will be in place?

We are working with the Walter E. Washington Convention Center and our hotels. Measures will include:

  • Controlled access so only authorized individuals can enter ASHA Convention areas.
  • On-site security presence in key locations.
  • Collaboration with the DC Metropolitan Police Department to monitor activity in and around the Convention Center.

Is Washington, D.C. safe to visit?

Millions of people visit Washington, D.C. each year, and most enjoy the city without incident. Like any large city, it’s best to stay aware of your surroundings, travel in groups when possible, and stick to well-lit, busy areas.

Will the ASHA Convention schedule change because of this?

No. The ASHA Convention will take place as planned, November 20–22, 2025, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.

Attendees will receive on-site safety updates in the ASHA Convention mobile app.

The ASHA Convention is one of the largest professional development events for audiologists; speech-language pathologists; speech, language, and hearing scientists; and speech-language pathology and audiology assistants. Bringing together approximately 15,000 attendees, the annual Convention offers more than 2,500 sessions eligible for ASHA continuing education credit covering the latest research, clinical skills, and techniques in communication sciences and disorders.
