Content Area: General Interest

Proposals appropriate for submission to this topic area include those that focus on matters of global interest pertaining to all aspects of the professions of audiology and speech-language pathology as practiced around the world. Topics included are clinical issues, service delivery, global social issues such as immigration and refugees services, service delivery to underserved populations, interprofessional education and practice models implemented around the world and research that addresses how interprofessional competencies are inserted within the curriculum or practice of the professions. The evaluation of collaborative care protocols and outcomes assessment specific to global issues should also be included in this topic area, along with international humanitarian models of assessment and intervention in communication disorders.

Research

  • Translational, applied, or implementation research related to global issues and practices
  • Research that facilitates global exchange of ideas for effective clinical practices across work settings and across national boundaries
  • Policies, challenges, and strategies that impact research in global communities
  • Implications of the Multilateral Mutual Recognition Agreement (MMRA) and other issues that impact recognition of credentials across borders
  • Policies, challenges, and strategies that impact research in global communities, displaced communities and refugee camps
  • Family displacement and its impact on language development
  • Research that facilitates interprofessional education and practice in global communities

Professional Education

  • General policy and/or service delivery issues regarding populations in countries around the globe, but outside of the United States
  • World Health Organization policies regarding communication disorders
  • Humanitarian models of service in communication disorders
  • Epidemiology of speech-language, auditory and balance disorders; reports of prevalence and incidence of such disorders
  • Education and health care issues and access, attitude, and worldview regarding services in countries outside of the United States
  • Administrative, educational and health care models (including interprofessional models), and collaboration projects in global contexts
  • Projects that accentuate global health initiatives that include communication sciences and disorders
  • Projects that facilitate student, faculty and/or professional global experiences in speech-language pathology and/or audiology
  • Projects that emphasize facilitation of global cooperation and collaboration among speech-language pathologists, audiologists, speech, language and hearing scientists, affiliates and students who are interested in communication and related disorders with international breadth
  • Implementation science as it relates to global health issues
  • Ecological models of service delivery in global communities (i.e. clinical and/or community based) as it pertains to the practice of the profession as well as its integration in the curriculum and intern’s clinical practice
  • Ethical issues related to global issues and practices, as well as service learning and humanitarian efforts
  • Technology related to global issues and practices for service delivery, and the practical and ethical issues associated to its implementation
  • Global technical assistance and training models on how to practice and address communication disorders
  • Providing services in response to needs global crisis management
