Awards Ceremony The ASHA Awards Ceremony celebrates the highest achievements and excellence in the professions. Presentations will be made to recipients of the Honors of the Association— ASHA’s most prestigious award, which recognizes lifetime achievement—and to ASHA Fellows, whose contributions are the cornerstones of the communication sciences and disorders (CSD) professions. Additional awards will be given to honor other members who have also contributed to the professions and to the Association. The Annie Glenn Award is also given each year at the Awards Ceremony. Annie Glenn, wife of the late Senator John Glenn, is known nationwide for her advocacy for those with communication disorders. The Annie Glenn award shines a spotlight on those who exemplify Annie’s efforts to bring attention to stuttering—a disorder she overcame as an adult—and other important issues related to communication disorders. This beloved award is a perpetual highlight of the ASHA Convention. This year, we award the 2018 Annie to Daymond John, a well-known entrepreneur. Daymond is the creator of the iconic fashion brand, FUBU (For Us By Us), a marketing expert, an author, and business and motivational speaker. Many people will recognize Daymond as one of the original “Sharks” on the ABC-TV show, “Shark Tank,” on which he and four other prominent executives listen to business pitches from everyday people hoping to launch their company or product to new heights. Investing his own money in every project, Daymond becomes partners with the entrepreneurs to help turn their dreams into a reality. Millions of viewers tune into the show as Daymond demonstrates his marketing prowess and entrepreneurial insights, which have earned him the nickname, “The People’s Shark.” Daymond John also uses hearing aids and has dyslexia, and he has used his platform to bring awareness to communication disorders. He has long spoken openly about his learning disability and how it affected both him and his family. His mother commented that his challenges were “stepping stones to greatness,” and Daymond has said that reaching a position of success gave him the opportunity to speak out for those living with similar conditions. More recently, he has talked about his hearing loss and the positive changes that high-tech hearing aids have made in his life. Daymond’s awareness efforts included traveling to Apple Store locations across the country to speak about how tech innovation is helping those with disabilities. Join us on Friday evening as we honor the achievements of colleagues in the professions and award the “Annie” to Daymond John in recognition of his efforts to increase awareness of communication issues. Come to the Awards Ceremony and be inspired! The Awards Ceremony is sponsored, in part, by Artic Bites. Daymond John Friday, November 16 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. CC, HALL B2
